5 out of 5 stars Works great for school   July 28, 2010

I am a grad student in a doctoral program so I weighed my desire for a Kindle against my desire to eat nothing but Ramen noodles for over a year. When the new graphite 9.7 Kindle was introduced I finally decided to stop agonizing and buy. I am so glad I did.

PROs

PDF: For me, the biggest and most useful thing about the new graphite Kindle is the ability to store and read PDF articles. As a graduate student, journal articles are essentially my life. I have thousands of them on my computer, now on my Kindle. I can read them when I fly to conferences or just mark notes and take them into lecture for discussion. The Kindle has been remarkably handy in this respect. (I should note that I am a getting my degree in a social science field, and therefore most of the articles I read are not technical or graphics heavy, usually just tables and notes).

BOOKS: Books are also very easy to read, although my free time to read for pleasure is pretty much nonexistant. I have not had any trouble with the screen or the appearance of the words, after a while I even forget that I am not holding an actual book. I do not have any of my textbooks on the Kindle but that is just a personal quirk of mine.

TIME: With this Kindle I can hook it up to my computer via the USB and just load my articles on very quickly. I have also found the downloads from the Amazon store to my Kindle are also very quick and I have been in some remote areas of the country and still been able to download books.

CONs

FOLDERS: As other reviewers mentioned, there is no folder option, so I have to scroll through pages of books and articles to find the correct one. There is an option to tag the articles but I just have not found the time to do that yet.

WEIGHT: The 9.7 is a bit awkward to hold and read. I solved this by buying a case that flipped open into a stand for the Kindle.

FEAR: I read review upon review before deciding to purchase my Kindle and one of my biggest fears came from reading reviews where the Kindle would just freeze and quit or suffer a slight fall and break beyond repair. I purchased the extended warranty but I still live in fear of irrepable damage to this device on which I spent so much money, especially given how much flying I do.

NEUTRALs

COLOR: I like the color of the graphite Kindle more than the white. I also think the color might help the words on the screen stand out a bit more, but that is a personal opinion.

KEYBOARD: I have not used the keyboard very much, so I am not sure how to rank it. In my experiene it has been pretty easy and smooth.

OVERALL

So far, I am very pleased with my decision to purchase this Kindle. I have found that the ability to store and take thousands of journal articles with me to conferences and meetings and lectures has been extremely helpful. I like the look and feel of the Kindle and I find it very easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Kindle DX: Bigger and Better   June 12, 2009

I just finished my first session with the Kindle DX, and I am absolutely delighted. I have subscribed to the customer service blogs for the Kindle 2, and have watched "nit pick" after "nit pick" come cascading from people, who quite frankly, need to get a life. If you do not want a book for a penny more than $9.99, don't buy it! If you are in the remote hills of Asia, and the product is wireless only in the USA, move home! And so on!
When you turn on your DX, you are now holding a perfectly sized book, substantailly heavier, but, oh, those large fonts. They are glorious. I am 55 years old and have had lasik surgery on one eye only. My vision corrects to 20-20 without glasses, but neither close-up nor far away feel absolutely perfect. That is the price I pay for not having to wear glasses.
With the Kindle DX, the font is perfect, using one of the two larger sizes. Compared to the Kindle 2, there is more content per page turn for the same size font, due obviously to the increased real estate on the screen.
Next, when I am wanting to find something, like for example a bible verse, I go to a smaller font, and get WAY MORE content. Once I am where I need to be, a quick pop to a larger font has me home free.
Of course, I want the backlight and the color, and would pay for them, but they will come in due course.
Do not subscribe to the USA today, unless you want a very watered down view of the paper. This device is not ready for a color newspaper. You would be much better served by subscribing on your PC, or reading the free USA today site on your iPhone or PC.
The iPhone integration continues to be superb, and if you want a quick bedtime read, it is backlit!
The downloading and upgrading remain remarkably easy.
Obviously, removing the left side buttons was a terrible mistake, and the cries of horrified anger will undoubtedly cause the problem to be solved on the next generation.
Will the next Kindle be better? Of course! Will the next iMac be better? Of course! Will the next generation Windows computer be better? Of course. Ditto for flat screen TV's, cars, and telephones.
If you are a technology freak who has to get the latest and greatest immediately, you already have your DX. If you are almost that far towards the "bleeding edge" you should enthusiastically pony up for this baby, 'cause you are going to love it. You already know that you can sell your DX for about 70% of what you paid for it when the next one comes out. As a matter of fact, if the next one has color and/or backlighting, and you buy it the first day, you will get almost 90% if you sell quickly.
So, if you are a first time Kindl'r, it is time to get in the game. If you are an upgrade candidate, this is a clear buy if screen size and font size matter. When the backlit, color version hits, watch for my presale, I always keep my equipment in brand new condition!

This is the fist time I have reviewed a product. Though I enjoy reading other people's reviews, I never felt strongly enough to write my own review. But having my Kindle DX for a little over a week has changed that.

My primary reason for buying the Kindle DX was work. I work in the computer field and need to read a lot of documentation. Often I will print out the documentation so I can use it for reference. This leads to lots of manuals that eventually get outdated and need to be recycled. On the kindle DX I can copy over the documentation, which is in pdf format, and carry all the information I need with me. In fact, I recently had a meeting with a client where I needed to verify the syntax for a SQL statement. I pulled out my kindle and was able to show exactly what the documentation said.

But I am also enjoying the kindle as a repository for personal reading material. I have purchased a number of books from Amazon, of course, but there is a ton of free material on the web. If I didn't want to purchase any current work, I could spend my days reading Tolstoy, Shakespeare, Twain, ...

I recommend the Kindle DX for anyone who like me reads a lot of pdfs or wants to enjoys having immediate access to books. It is a powerful tool and I am enjoying it immensely.

Another thing I wanted to add is that I can access email with my Kindle and check websites. All without having to pay extra. I certainly understand those who cannot afford the Kindle or want more features, but for now this is the best that is out there. If you need access to a large # of pdfs and books, this is the device. I don't think it is heavy, but I didn't buy the smaller K1 or K2. I choose not to buy them because they were too small.

For all the negative comments I have read, I haven't heard alot about alternatives. So far, everyone I know who has seen it loves it. I feel fortunate to have it and would recommend you buy one if you can afford it.

6/24 Update

This may never happen to anyone else, but I accidentally tried to buy the same book twice. I need to start taking my memory pills again (I just can't remember where I put them). Anyway, the Kindle nicely told me that I had already downloaded the book and there was no need for me to purchase it again.

I just love this machine.

I received a latest generation DX as a birthday present after giving my wife a Kindle 6" for hers. The first DX I received had a permanent 2" vertical smudge under the screen and the accelerometer was so touchy I had to disable it. Amazon overnighted a replacement unit, so I really can't knock the Kindle. Amazon's customer service is one reason I use it for, well, just about everything I buy.

I originally wanted the DX for Cisco and Microsoft Press PDFs. I found that the DX can display them adequately, although the print is sometimes a bit small, depending on the original font size on a PDF. Still, it's readable, especially if I display pages horizontally. And the DX is much more portable than a stack of certification books. I've found that I've been reading more novels than textbooks, though. My DX feels like a hardcover book compared to the paperback style of the 6". I know a larger screen doesn't sound like that big a deal, given that you only need a few lines of text to make a functional reader, but it does. I can't imagine reading a paperback DTB at this point.

My wife tried an Amazon case for her 6", but the case doesn't have any kind of latch or binding on the right side. Amazon cases hold a Kindle DX or 6" using metal hooks that slip into two notches on the left side of the Kindle. It's a clever design, but we were concerned that we'd eventually scuff or crack the Kindle case near the notches. The M-Edge cases are a good alternative, since they have elastic loops for the right side of the 6" and the DX.

5 out of 5 stars Traveling Reader.   July 3, 2010

I have been a user of the Kindle DX for almost a year and even though I do not use all of the features I am ready to give this device an extremely high rating.

I travel for a living and I am the guy who always has several books in his bag just to pass the time, of course carrying books really adds to the weight load. The kindle solved all of that, I now travel with this slim light weight device , not only does it hold the 3k plus books it also carries a good conversation too. I have met more people who want to know more about the device and of course since I am willing that leads to other conversations.
As of now I have only seen one Sony reader in the airport everyone else with ebooks all have kindles, all generations but not as many Dx's. I think the new model with the price drop will change that.

Now recently I did have a problem, the screen on my kindle was acting up, I could not get it to display anything correctly ( I do not know if I dropped it without realizing it or if it was screen malfunction) I was traveling on a flight and when I got to my hotel I called tech support to help find a fix , their was none but since I was still under warranty they overnighted me a new one to my hotel, I had it the next day. I did not expect to get service like that. Awesome!

All in all, the connivance of traveling with my books, a book store ( Amazon) no monthly fees, Long lasting batteries ( I charge it every few weeks.) Previews of books before you buy and the changing of the fonts to a larger size are all features for both kindles ( II and DX.) that I love. The DX adds to that with a larger screen , crisp black and white images that fit the screen and taking pdf files from work and reading them on the kindle., I also like the new feature of posting excerpts of what you are reading to face book and the new folder system for organizing books

The features under experimental tab like voice and web are things that I have played with but I do not use them or depend on them.

The one thing I pondered on before buying my kindle was would my mind miss the look of the print, I was half way through my first book on the kindle before I asked myself that question again. The answer, I didn't notice the change.
