5 out of 5 stars Lots of good tips.   May 30, 2009

I'm a big Real Housewives fan and I bought this book because of that. I'm glad I did. A lot of it really makes sense too. I know that many people don't agree with a lot of the advice that Bethenny Frankel has to offer, but if it works for her then it'll work for others too. The recipes are also really good. Another great book that I read that has some really good weight loss and maintenance tips in it is Goodbye, Fatty! Hello, Skinny! How I Lost Weight And Still Ate The Foods I Loved-Without Dieting. Like this book, it not only has some really good information, but it's also an entertaining read.

5 out of 5 stars this book is good if you approach it with the right attitude   June 8, 2009

i really liked this book and found it helpful in my own struggle to be happy with myself and make better eating decisions. in turn, this has allowed me to lose weight and finally give up all the diets and find some peace with my eating habits. i gave it 5 stars not because it was deep and perfect... it is not... but even so, it really changed some of my thinking and habits. perhaps it was just the right time to read the book for me... but if that is also the case for you... then it is a 5 star book... if not... then you probably would not give it 5 stars as i did... but i was ready for what this book had to say and for that reason, it worked for me and i think it can work for others.

i can see why some reviewers felt that the book was promoting the idea of starving oneself as the author herself eats very little... but i have to say if you can get past the list of what she eats (which only comes up at the end of the book) and focus on your own dietary needs as she suggests... and if you read the messages and ideas she is trying to teach in the book rather than trying to duplicate what the author herself actually eats on a day-to-day basis, that you will may just come out ahead with some new tools to help easily change your eating habits. most of us will never be a tv celebrity and most of us will never be size 2... but we can use her approach to become what is healthy and right for our own body... it is all about perspective.

in my opinion, the book really promotes some useful ways of thinking that can help any of the hundreds of thousands of americans who have gotten caught up in the trap of overeating to reprogram their attitude towards eating and meals and really focus on their behavior. at heart, the book is trying to teach you to listen to your own voice and eat only when you are hungry and stop when you are satisfied. it does so in 10 or so simple lessons that are given in short mantras that are easy to remember and apply to daily life and many situations... whether you are a stay at home mom or full-time business lady.

after reading it, i personally disregarded the authors own food journal (which i felt was not needed since the whole book is telling you to listen to your own voice) and instead focused on my own body, my own hunger, and my own level of satisfaction with each meal. i am not aiming to be the same size as the author... i am just aiming to be a healthier and better me... the best i can be. and that is the attitude one needs for this book... as i already stated, most of us will never be a tv celebrity and most of us will never be size 2... but i can be a happy size 8 or 10 which is just right for me... and this book helps.

the simple mantras made it easy to remember and once i started reading, i found myself thinking more about my habits and eating more reasonably and losing weight without really trying. the more i did this, the more it became natural... and the more i naturally started to slim down as the book suggests... at heart, most of us are naturally meant to be healthy... and that includes a healthy and active body weight.

i really appreciated the idea in the book of listening to your own "food voice" versus listening to the "food noise" that goes on in your head. the food voice would be like the good angel on your shoulder while the food noise is like the little devil telling you to finish off the entire bucket of buttered popcorn at the movies... by tuning into this, i naturally started only eating when i was hungry or really wanted something... some days it would be more food... some days less... but it all balanced in the end.

i also think the author is sympathetic to women out there who struggle with eating... and that is a lot of us... so the book made you feel good about yourself... and i learned that if you listen to your own voice, you won't starve yourself, and you won't gorge yourself... you will just naturally eat what you need and be the size that you need to be to live a healthful life.

5 out of 5 stars Bought this book out of sheer curiosity   June 7, 2009

So I bought the book out of sheer curiosity and also because I am a Bethenney Frankel fan. I appreciate the fact that she's on t.v. and doesn't take herself too seriously....

I am also in the middle of Jillian Michael's "Making the Cut" 30 day program. So dieting in general is in the big thing on my mind lately.

I found this book very liberating. Almost as if I needed permission to quit dieting. i.e. "You can have it all, just not all at once." Growing up in an Italian household I've become a chronic portion distortioner and it's become commonplace in my life to keep on eating just because it tastes good. Also, as a child I was required to clean my plate and I took that habit into my college years (thanks Freshman 20)and into adulthood.

I learned that I don't have to let the taste of food or the portions control me. I learned I don't have to eat it all just because I ordered it. I didn't have to eat that entire restaurant omelet this morning with the lumpy spinach and rubbery mushrooms. So I didn't. And for the first time in my life I was OK with that.

There's alot of criticism about this book promoting poor eating habits. I think it's unfair not to mention that Bethenney repeatedly states throughout the book that she's not telling you what to eat or how much to eat. She's merely giving you examples of what she eats. If you focus on the 10 rules or principles she writes about and apply them to your specific life, they are invaluable. You really can stop stuffing your face just cuz you paid for it, or because it tastes good. You really don't have to eat like it's your last meal every meal.

I would absolutely recommend the book to a friend. The recipes are yummy and the principles are sound.

Boo to all of you who just don't get what Ms. Frankel is saying.

5 out of 5 stars Empowering for women - witty and inspiring   May 28, 2009

I LOVED this book and have already lost 10 pounds (in 2 mos) by heeding her advice. I found it witty and engrossing, like talking to a funny girlfriend who totally has your back and wants you to succeed. Something clicked for me when the author wrote "It's just food" in the very enlightening section on "Food Noise". I realized how much power we (women) give food. I found much of the book psychologically liberating - food (i.e. obsessing over calories, fat grams, my body, etc) was ruling over so much of my time and thoughts, time I could spend LIVING. This book is different in that respect - it addresses what is going on in your mind, not just the factual stuff like calories in vs. calories burned, which, yes, IS in this and ALL other diet books, as the negative reviewers keep repeating as if this makes the book invalid. An author cannot assume knowledge on the part of the reader. I didn't mind being reminded of this simple fact - it helped me feel in control of my weight, being re-armed with this basic but crucial information.

The author talks about training yourself to be satisfied with smaller amounts of food. Her "Law of Diminishing Returns" was worth the price of the book alone -- Genius! I also loved her "Cancel Your Membership in the Clean Plate Club". How many of us raised in the 50's and 60's were shamed into overeating because of the "starving children in India/Africa"? (How is my eating too much going to help them?) She is right about how ridiculous portions have become in America - a bagel used to be tiny - now they are as big as your head. BTW, I have ALWAYS pulled out the insides of bagels & French bread - (empty calories) - and the crust is the best part - so I thought it amusing that other reviewers were so offended by this advice.

I have to say I am appalled at the negative reviews on this site warning of "eating disorder" promotion - no wonder men call women hysterical. Some of you admit you haven't even read the book. This site is for book reviews, not personal vendettas. Clearly many of you are RH of NY viewers who dislike the author, Bethenny Frankel, and so dash to your computers, furiously typing misleading, uninformed "reviews". Naturally Thin is best seller for a reason. Those of you who are "grateful" to the hysterical eating-disorder-obsessed "reviewers" for saving you from spending $9.60 on this book: I suggest you hurry to your local library and check out "Naturally Thin". Read it with an open mind and you might be surprised at the refreshing feeling of freedom when you next sit down at a restaurant and open a menu. No more fear, no more obsessions over your fat thighs - "It's just food"! The book felt a big pep talk with a ton of practical, helpful insights, such as navigating a party buffet.

I must clear up untruths in many of the negative reviews: yes, the author says she takes "just 3 bites" of her personal favorite, "FATTY steak", but she also says she FILLS UP on salads, veggies, healthier appetizers like crab cakes, etc. The point is, allow yourself permission to eat anything you want (versus denying yourself something forever - I mean who could live without chocolate cake?) - but savor just a small amount of it, and fill up on fiber-rich, healthy choices. (I love onion rings and used to split an order with my husband. Now I have just three, every time. I really enjoy those 3 onion rings, and feel really good about myself for being in control.)

Frankel states many times that she is NOT telling you to eat like her, but to follow your own Food Voice. I love that she printed an honest food diary - she made some bad choices, as we all do. None of this, "I eat 1 oz of turkey for my midday snack every single day" crap you often read in celebrity diet plans. I admire that she is truthful, even admitting what she ate the morning of a hangover - SHOCKING! :-)

Another untruth stated by "reviewers" who wrote that Frankel exercises constantly to keep thin: She specifically says she does NOT exercise much anymore (due to her very busy career). And as for the criticisms of her alcohol intake, if I were in my 30's, with a hot career, living in NYC where NO ONE DRIVES, I most certainly would have cocktails a few nights a week!

I can't wait to get my copy back from a friend I loaned it to so I can read it again. Naturally Thin is a must read for any women serious about getting to and maintaining a healthy weight. You will never think of food the same again.

5 out of 5 stars Common Sense   October 26, 2009

What this book really comes down to is common sense. Eat smaller portions, eat mostly healthy foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains), but also eat what you want to in moderation. I never "knew" how to do that before. I've always thought that the only way to loose weight would be to count every calorie and cut out sugar and other "bad" foods.

I've spent years dieting off and on to loose weight but would always give up because I felt so deprived all of the time. My latest diet was Nutrisystem, and it does work if you stick to the plan, but I don't like the food and eating the same thing over and over again got very tiresome very quickly. And I realized that once I got to my ideal weight that I would still have to diet to maintain it, and thinking of a lifetime of dieting is depressing to say the least! With this new way of thinking/eating, you can eat what you want, not count calories and still loose weight. It's a lifestyle, not a "diet". I wanted fudge today, so I ate some fudge. Last night I wanted ice cream so I ate some ice cream. Of course I didn't stuff my face with it, I just had a small amount, but you can eat what you want and not feel deprived. Like she says in the book, "there will always be another meal".

I lost 5 1/2 pounds in the first week after adopting her principles, and I've quit obsessing about food, which I've never been able to do before. I think it's because for the first time I realize that there will always be another meal, and I can finally eat anything I want to and not feel deprived. A cookie or a piece of cheesecake won't ruin my diet. She encourages you to eat what you really want to eat, because if you don't you'll probably give in later and eat too much.

Some of the negative reviews are leaving out important information. A lot of people have commented on her story about only eating 3 bites of steak, but they didn't mention that she ate other things along with that steak. She's not anorexic and this book does not teach anorexia. It teaches how to eat a normal amount of food, which I think our society has forgotten what that is, because of the huge portions that are served everywhere.

Don't expect to drop huge amounts of weight very quickly, it's more about eating right for your body and letting your body normalize as well as your ideas about food and eating.
